After graduating from LAMDA, somewhat ironically, the first professional work Stephen was offered was a musical! It was this job that made him eligible to join the actor’s union Equity – a prerequisite for any professional actor, but where a rule applies that each actor’s registered name must be unique. As another actor was already registered as Stephen Emery it meant that Stephen had to change his . . . introducing Stephen Moyer . . . !

So, with the name change resolved and this job completed it was immediately followed by three years in repertory with possibly the most famous classical theatre company; the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), both at the National Theatre, London and the RSC, Stratford-upon-Avon.  See the original programme from Romeo & Juliet, here.

Thereafter, Stephen was cast in the lead role in a touring production of Romeo & Juliet with the Oxford Stage Company throughout the UK and Japan, followed by the world premiere of The Who’s Pete Townsend’s rock opera ‘The Iron Man’ at the Young Vic, London. See the original program from the Iron man here. There is still a review of Romeo & Juliet online, you can read it here. Stephen at the time he played Romeo with The Oxford Stage Company with Tara Woodward as Juliet

He did a lot of theatre and he says he loved it, but it really was not where he saw his career going so he transitioned to film and TV where his first work included a role in a sitcom about a family with a talking dog that he now laughingly describes as a “crime against television.” He’s been doing leading roles in TV and film ever since.

His British television credits have included leading roles in Channel 4 dramas ‘Men Only‘, ‘NY-LON‘, Five’s ‘Menace‘ and the BBC’s ‘The Grand‘, ‘Lilies‘ and ‘Empathy‘, as well as a number of guest roles in popular shows such as Cold Feet‘, ‘Midsomer Murders‘ and ‘Waking the Dead.’ In the meantime, he made his screen debut starring in the eponymous role in ‘Prince Valiant‘ with Katherine Heigl, followed by ‘Quills‘ with Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix & Michael Caine, as well in subsequent movies Including ‘Entrusted‘ and ‘Restraint.’

US television credits include leading roles in ‘Princess of Thieves‘ with Keira Knightley, NBC’s mini-series ‘Uprising‘ with ‘David Schwimmer’, Hank Azaria, and Donald Sutherland, USA Network’s Golden Globe and Emmy nominated ‘The Starter Wife starring Debra Messing. He was supposed to appear in the FOX drama pilot ‘NSA Innocent’ (retitled ‘Company Man’), but got the role in “True Blood” instead. His earlier role was taken over by Jason Behr.
