Plot Summary: Drama set both above and below stairs in an opulent Manchester hotel after World War I, The Grand is a cross between Upstairs, Downstairs and “Duchess of Duke Street, The” (1976). The hotel is owned by brothers John and Marcus Bannerman, with John’s wife Sarah holding a casting vote. John is dull but reliable; Marcus is devious, unscrupulous – and in love with Sarah… Mr Collins is the head porter whose son died in the war but who is too proud to let his grief show. Kate Morris and Monica Jones are chambermaids who dream of bettering themselves: things look up for Monica when one of the long-term guests, Esme Harkness (an ageing prostitute!), takes her under her wing and teaches her how to be a lady. Stephen MOyer plays Stephen Bannerman, a WWI vet who has been drastically changed by the experience and has trouble fitting in back in civilian life.
On the outside, The Grand, located in Manchester, appears to be a flourishing hotel, complete with the latest modern luxuries of the 1920s. But look inside and you’ll discover a hotbed of illicit affairs, prostitution, murder and other fascinating doings. Stay awhile and discover the dramatic style, riveting stories and wonderful characters in this highly acclaimed series. Whether it’s sexual politics, double-dealing, mystery, suspense or well-timed humor, you’ll find everything you need in this fascinating place.

  1. Loved the video. Thanks, Parise. I didn’t get to all the photos in the gallery … count on my returning to view them all.

Thanks, Lynn and Parise, for providing this entertaining look at The Grand.

  2. Why was he only in some of the episodes?  I was watching The Grand on netflix and was disappointed when I got to episode 9, he wasn’t in it!  He is probably the main reason I stuck through the first 8 episodes!  I guess I just have to wait for the next season of true blood….
