Auction of pics signed by Stephen Moyer & Anna Paquin for a cure for Ankylosing Spondylitis

fundraisingiaam

I would like to ask your attention for an auction that benefits two non-profit organizations that have a strong connection to my personal life: The International Autoimmune Arthritis Movement and the Spondylitis Association of America.

In 2009 I was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS).
AS is a form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine.  It causes inflammation of the vertebrae that leads to severe, chronic pain and discomfort and can lead to new bone formation on the spine, causing the spine to fuse in a fixed, immobile position.

Currently, there is no known cure for AS, but there are treatments and medications available to reduce symptoms and manage the pain.
That all sounds very technical and a picture is worth a thousand words. This is what AS looks like if it’s not treated. The spine of this patient is fully fused and leaves him immobile in a forward bent position.

No, I don’t look like this. Even though it took 20 very long years to finally reach  diagnosis, only my lower back vertebrae are fully fused and my neck vertebrae only partially.

In October 2009 I started with the medication. I inject myself twice a week and I will have to continue to do this for the rest of my days. Even though the AS was in an advanced stage when I started treatment, I’ve responded very well to the medication and my mobility has improved enormously. I can stand up straight again and tie my own shoes. The pain level has been reduced significantly and I can work a full time job (besides being co-admin of 2 fan sites). Under the circomstances I am doing quite well, but I worry about futher loss of mobility and complications.

For the auction to support research to find a cure for Ankylosing Spondylitis and other related diseases I have chosen 2 photos signed by Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin. This auction works the same as always, only the website where you place your bid is different and you’ll pay directly to the non-profit. Lynn has the photos in her Los Angeles home and will send them to the auction winner.

The auction starts on November 25. Visit the auction listing here:

Please check out all the other items on auction as well here.

Thank you.

    • Before I was diagnosed I had never heard of it, had I known then it wouldn’t had taken 20 years to get diagnosed. AS affects me negatively every day in a thousand little and not so little things.

  • Thank you for sharing your personal story, Shad, and for giving us an opportunity to help in some small way. I wish you much health and happiness, and can’t thank you enough for the joy you bring us through your extraordinary work on the Vault and AllStephenMoyer.

  • OMG Shad! How devastating! I have a close friend who has dealt with several autoimmune diseases, including crippling rheumatoid arthritis and sclereoderma. And I see patients with autoimmune diseases like lupus nearly every day; so, yes, this is a major health issue that doesn’t get the attention it should. I’m glad they finally diagnosed the problem, and started giving you treatment. Will definitely be bidding on this auction…we need to raise as much money as possible.

    • thanks, so many suffer from arthritis and it really is crippling. Before starting the medication I was partially disabled.

  • Shad, I know how much you have suffered and am so glad that the diagnosis has made your life so much more livable. I hope this auction raises lots for the cause.

  • Shad, thank you for sharing your very personal story with all of us. I hope a great deal of money is raised with this auction. I’m sorry it took so long for a diagnosis. Thankfully, the medicine is helping you.

Bless you for all you do for us here at ASM, the forum and The Vault. You are doing your best to live your life to the fullest. That takes courage and determination. I salute you!

  • This is a new one to me. I had never heard of Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Kudos to you Shad for sharing your personal health issues to help others.
I have friends that deal with serious illnesses stemming from autoimmune diseases and I know it can be a struggle. Keep up the good fight Shad.
It can’t keep a good babe down.

  • Shad:

So sorry to hear about your AS, but happy you showed the courage to come forward. I will visit the auction site today.

‘For each ripple then will become a wave,
To touch each heart and a life to save’

    ‘I give myself away
    So You can use me’

  • I’ll be honest: up until today I never heard of this condition. That poor
man in the photo. Kudos to you for sharing your situation with your readers. Glad to hear that you have responded well to the treatment. I hope these auctions bring in a good amount of money so that more awareness can be raised.

    Fight on mate!!

  • With sadness in my heart I’m reading that you have been on a 20 year struggle to diagnose the condition you suffer from, Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). Thankfully you have some relief from your symptoms now but as you stated so much more needs to be done to find a cure for AS.
On the 25th I will be there donating and happily supporting your cause Shad, you are the best for all you foreign the Vault and ASM, thank you.
